Duke Valentour

Duke Valentour holds the Industrial Engineer and Systems Engineer position at Ball Aerospace, a part of BAE Systems, which now operates under Space & Mission Systems in Boulder, Colorado. The organization focuses on developing space technologies and delivering solutions supporting national security, intelligence, and civilian missions. In this role, Duke evaluates engineering workflows, concentrating on identifying cycle times and process durations related to assembly and fabrication operations.

He leads efforts to improve processes within Research and Development, Production, and Depot Programs tied to Optical Systems. His work involves conducting root cause analyses to detect inefficiencies or failures and creating sustainable strategies to resolve them. Duke regularly collaborates with production technicians to ensure effective implementation of these improvements.

Duke began his career at Ball Aerospace as an intern in 2020. His performance led to a full-time role, and in 2024, following Ball Aerospace’s acquisition by BAE Systems, he was promoted to his current engineering position.

Jonathan Wayne Valentour’s Aviation Journey

Jonathan Wayne Valentour’s interest in aviation began early in life through visits to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio. Accompanied by his grandfather, Colonel Wayne Basset, he explored the museum’s extensive collection of more than 360 aircraft and missiles, the largest military aviation museum in the world. These experiences helped foster his passion for flight.

While interning at Ball Aerospace in 2021, Duke successfully passed his private pilot check ride. He continued his pilot training by completing the instrument rating in 2023, which allows flying in a broader range of weather conditions. In early 2024, he pursued and earned his commercial pilot license. Later that year, he earned his Certified Flight Instructor certificate.

Alongside instructing, Duke worked as a glider tow pilot at Mile High Gliding, operating out of Boulder Airport. He holds endorsements for complex airplanes, high-performance aircraft, tailwheel operations, and glider towing. Duke has accumulated around 800 flight hours, including 250 hours in tailwheel aircraft and 10 hours in complex airplanes. His experience includes instructing at Journeys Aviation and Mile High Gliding, covering flight training and ground school.

Education: From Archbishop Alter High School to Ohio State University

Jonathan Wayne Valentour attended Archbishop Alter High School in Kettering, Ohio, a Catholic private school focused on academic and personal development. While at school, Duke participated in baseball and football. His football teams qualified for the state playoffs during his sophomore, junior, and senior years.

In 2017, Duke enrolled at Ohio State University in Columbus, earning a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Systems Engineering. At OSU, he served as Business Development Lead for the Buckeye Space Launch Initiative from 2020 to 2021. While studying, he also worked at Ball Packaging, producing cans and lids. During this period, he became aware of Ball Aerospace and later secured an internship there.

Young Eagles Volunteer Program

Jonathan Wayne Valentour volunteers with the Young Eagles program under the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA). The program offers free introductory flights to youth aged 8 to 17, aiming to encourage interest in aviation and inspire future pilots. Duke provides pre-flight briefings, conducts the flights, and leads post-flight question-and-answer sessions.

Founded over seventy years ago, the EAA started as a group interested in building airplanes and has since expanded to promote all aspects of aviation. Through this involvement, Duke shares his enthusiasm for flying with others, continuing the support and encouragement he received from his grandfather and father.

Personal Interests: Enjoying Outdoor Activities

In addition to his professional and aviation commitments, Duke enjoys spending time outdoors. His preferred activities include hiking and skiing. He values the physical challenges these pursuits offer and the opportunity to engage with nature.

These hobbies complement his passion for aviation by providing an alternative way to experience the natural world. Time outdoors allows Duke to balance his technical work with physical activity and reflection.
